The Schoolhouse

Tomales, California, United States

This cozy farmhouse at Stemple Creek Ranch (West Marin) is not to be missed. It is a few miles from the ocean and boasts two bedrooms, a quiet yard with garden and covered patio, and views of the countryside that stretch for miles. We also have two other cabins (Cottage for 2 is AirBnB "Rustic Studio Cottage" and Cabin for 4 is AirBnB "Rustic Cabin ").

The space

Stemple Creek Ranch is a family owned and operated organic cattle ranch in Tomales, CA, just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. We raise grass-fed and grass-finished beef and lamb. We also raise pork. This farmhouse is a refurbished old house with tons of charm. There are 2 bedrooms plus a queen sized bed pull out couch that is very good quality and very comfortable, and a beautiful garden and covered patio.

The ranch is just a few miles away from the town of Tomales, less than a mile away from Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway), and a great home base for exploring Marin or Sonoma Counties.

Please note: no pets, no smoking, no open flames. We have a smart TV but no cable.

We have two other rentals and an on site manager - they are in the same general vicinity. While it is possible to come to the ranch and not see another person, we can't promise that.

Guest access

The house itself, a front yard with outdoor seating, parking.

Other things to note

We occasionally bring our dog to the house, so if you are highly allergic, take note! There is Verizon cell service, but no AT&T cell service. We do have wifi on the ranch but it might not work perfectly because it is satellite based. There is also a local cafe, the Tomales Deli, that has free wifi.
If you want to order beef or lamb from us (Stemple Creek Ranch) please let us know 10 days in advance, and we can have it there for you when you arrive.

We stayed at Lisa's Airbnb on a ranch for just one night--en route to SFO from a wedding in Sonoma County, but we fell in love with the place and really wished we could have stayed longer. The cottage was perfect for us five (and there's room for more). Bedrooms were perfect, couch completely comfortable, bathrooms excellent--very nice shower. We didn't arrive until 5pm (HAD to drive down to The Marshall Store for oysters!), then took a long, long walk before making dinner in the well equipped kitchen. We ate outside in the covered veranda (wind-proof!) and watched the almost-full moon rise over the fields, saw cows amble across the darkening hills, and heard coyotes in the distance. Magic! I woke up before dawn to catch the sun illuminating the hills and to hear the dawn chorus. We went nuts over the birds--I had my Merlin app open so many times for birds we don't (or rarely) see or hear on the East Coast--California quail (nesting right behind the cottage?!), Violet-green swallow, Black phoebe, Eurasian Collared Doves, Cliff swallow, and on and on. Watched the blackbirds (red-winged and Brewer's) mob the vultures and ravens. The landscaping around the cottage is outrageously abundant--beautifully and naturally done! Nasturtiums, California poppies, Lamb's ears, roses, and on and on. A feast for the eyes, for sure. We'd love to return! Five stars all around.

Our family had a wonderful stay at Lisa's home on her family's ranch. The ranch's grounds are quiet, well-maintained, and offered us the perfect retreat during our travels. We loved the farmhouse features in the home and wished we could have stayed longer in the area. Lisa was a very responsive and accommodating host and we would love to stay at her property again.
